Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the automotive industry and the states signed an agreement to reduce the use of copper and other materials in motor vehicle brake pads. The Copper-Free Brake Initiative calls for cutting copper in brake pads to less than 5 percent by 2021 and 0.5 percent by 2025. This voluntary initiative also calls for cutting the amount of mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestiform fibers and chromium-6 salts in motor vehicle brake pads. These steps will decrease runoff of these materials from roads into the nation’s streams, rivers and lakes, where these materials can harm fish, amphibians and plants.

By the Numbers

California and Washington have already passed requirements to reduce these materials in brake pads. Prior to their enactment, dust from vehicular braking released an estimated 1.3 million pounds of copper into California’s environment in 2010 and about 250,000 pounds into Washington’s environment in 2011. Estimates for California show copper in urban runoff down as much as 61 percent thanks to changes in brake pad composition.

Hunter Engineering Company has launched a new technical and training channel on YouTube called the Hunter Learning Channel.

The Hunter Learning Channel features extensive training video playlists for every product category manufactured by Hunter. It also allows viewers to post technical and training questions on videos and receive detailed answers from Hunter’s staff of industry experts.

Hunter still maintains its promotional YouTube channel, called HunterEngCo. The HunterEngCo channel features new product introduction, product overview videos and excerpts from TV shows that highlight Hunter Equipment from networks such as Discovery Channel and SPEED.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced a settlement with three companies affiliated with Shell Oil Company to resolve Clean Air Act violations, including selling gasoline and diesel fuel that did not conform to federal standards. These violations resulted in excess emissions of harmful air pollutants from motor vehicles, which pose public health threats and environmental impacts. The companies will pay a $900,000 penalty to resolve these violations.

“Fuel standards established under the Clean Air Act play a major role in controlling harmful air pollution from vehicles and engines,” said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. “If unchecked, these pollutants can seriously impair the air we breathe, especially during summer months when they can reach higher levels. This settlement makes clear that if companies fail to produce fuels that comply with federal standards, they will be held accountable.” Read more

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) today released the 2015 Fuel Economy Guide, providing consumers with a valuable resource to help them choose the most fuel-efficient and low greenhouse gas emitting vehicles that meet their needs.

In comparison to previous years, the 2015 models include a greater number of fuel efficient and low-emission vehicles in a broader variety of classes and sizes.

The purchase price of a compressor is an important consideration when comparing new equipment options, but it’s only one of several cost components that affect the overall cost of owning and operating an air system. Low price options often have higher life cycle costs.

Installation, energy, maintenance and repair, as well as lost time and materials each greatly impact the overall bottom line of your compressed air system. Be sure to consider each of these other cost drivers as you are making a purchasing decision. In many cases, the benefits in one area outweigh the costs in another and vice versa.

Installation: The equipment you select directly impacts installation costs. It’s common for buyers to build separate rooms or structures to isolate noisy, vibrating compressors from employees and customers for the sake of safety and comfort. When selecting equipment, it is always a good idea to review the sound pressure level, general environmental requirements, such as air intake and discharge, and general electrical requirements of the equipment. Choices in piping also impact installation time and labor.

Proposal Seeks Input to Address “E10 Blend Wall,” Reaffirms Commitment to Biofuels

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today proposed for public comment the levels of renewable fuels to be blended into gasoline and diesel as required by Congress under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Developed with input from the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Agriculture, the proposal seeks public input on annual volume requirements for renewable fuels in all motor vehicle gasoline and diesel produced or imported by the United States in 2014. The proposal seeks to put the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program on a steady path forward – ensuring the continued long-term growth of the renewable fuel industry – while seeking input on different approaches to address the “E10 blend wall.”

“Biofuels are a key part of the Obama Administration’s “all of the above” energy strategy, helping to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, cut carbon pollution and create jobs,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “We have made great progress in recent years, and EPA continues to support the RFS goal of increasing biofuel production and use. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to develop a final rule that maintains the strength and promise of the RFS program.”

Atlas Auto Crushers solved its waste oil problem and became compliant with EPA regulations by installing an oil-recovery system to reduce the amount of oil in its waste water, according to a case study.

Oil Skimmers, the company that produced the oil recovery system, published the case study.

Atlas Auto Crushers says when it crushes junkers and strips them of their parts, despite removing oil from the engine, residual oil use to still leak and spread onto its lot, creating environmental concerns. In auto recycling, collecting and disposing hazardous waste is a major challenge and the EPA closely monitors industrial activity for environmental compliance.

Researchers have found a low-grade cotton from West Texas that might be able to clean oil spills more effectively and more eco-friendly than other methods currently in use. According to the study, one pound of the cotton can soak up more than 30 pounds of oil.

In a new study, researchers used unprocessed raw cottons to soak up oil, becoming one of the first studies to collect data on cotton and oil spills. Seshadri Ramkumar, the lead author of the study, said that he and his colleagues found that low-micronaine cotton is the most effective type of cotton at soaking up oil. Because this type of cotton is low-quality, it could also prove to be a cheaper option for cleaning up oil spills.

“In this region, about 10 percent of the cotton grown in West Texas is low micronaire,” said Ramkumar. “It doesn’t take a dye well, so it gets discounted. However, because low-micronaire cotton is less mature, it shrinks, and you are able to pack more fiber into a given area. The strength here is that the low-micronaire cotton absorbs the most crude oil. The oil is not only stuck to surface, the oil gets absorbed into the fiber.”

Barley straw and polypropylene wool have also been tested by other scientists for oil spills, but Ramkumar said those fibers still left big gaps in research, leaving room for improvements. This low-grade cotton proves to be significant in oil cleanup because it picks up oil by both absorption and adsorption, which makes the oil stick to the outer surface of the cotton.
