Global Atmospheric Mercury Assessment: Sources, Emissions and Transport [PDF]
Abstract: This updated report provides mercury emissions estimates, including estimates for product-related emissions, as well as the historical and current trends of emissions and scenarios for future emissions and the prospects for reductions. It also includes the results from recent research on atmospheric transport, modeling, and deposition of mercury.

Measured mercury concentrations in environmental media were used when available to parameterize these models. Human and wildlife exposures to mercury were predicted based on modeling results.

Also provided in this chapter are charts, maps, and data detailing mercury concentrations, wet and dry depositions, the predicted air concentrations and deposition rates around the US, and uncertainty and sensitivity analyses.

Abstract: This chapter presents the summary results for the watershed and transport modeling. In section 6.2, watershed results are summarized for pre-anthropogenic and current conditions period. This data is then used for evaluating potential impact of model plants considered in this report that emit mercury. In section 6.3, selected watershed/water body output are presented for all model plants. In section 6.4, the results of sensitivity analysis conducted with the IEM-2M model are discussed.

Abstract: Three different scenarios were overlain: rural, lacustrine (water body), and urban. The predicted mercury concentrations and mercury exposures models for each scenario reflected inputs from: single local anthropogenic source, regional atmospheric transport, and an estimate of the existing background concentrations.

Abstract: Chapter 3 makes an effort to update wildlife criterion (WC) values for mercury by calculating its value using methylmercury data. With the appropriate conversion factors, this data can be related to total mercury in fish and water. Chapter 4 looks at modeling analysis, long-range atmospheric transport analysis, uncertainties in environmental fate modeling, and mercury concentrations in water and aquatic biota.
