A.E. Stevenson High School
Abstract: A.E. Stevenson High School has been ranked as the top-ranked public high school in Illinois by Newsweek Magazine. To accommodate a projected enrollment of 4,500, the facility was expanded in September 2001 to include a new resource center, commons and a 30-classroom addition. The design called for spaces to encourage collaborative learning and expansive windows in the resource center that allow natural light creating a sense of comfort and stimulation for learning and social activities.

CHPS Best Practices Manual
Abstract: CHPS has developed and maintains a six-volume technical best practices manual for high performance schools. The manual covers planning, design, high performance benchmarks, maintenance and operations, commissioning and relocatable classrooms in high performance schools. The manual was developed through a consensus process with the assistance of school officials, state agencies, industry representatives and design professionals. CHPS periodically updates each volume of the manual. The volumes are available for download at this web site (the majority of which is non-printable format), or you may order a hard copy of the manual at this site.

Abstract: EcoCalculator give architects, engineers and others access to instant LCA results for hundreds of common building assemblies. The results embedded in the tool are based on detailed assessments completed with the ATHENA(R) Impact Estimator for Buildings, which in turn uses ATHENA datasets and data from the US Life Cycle Inventory Database.

Green Seal Environmental Standard for Paints and Coatings [PDF]
Abstract: This standard establishes environmental requirements for paints and coatings. The standard includes wall, anti-corrosive, and reflective coatings, floor paints and primers and undercoats. The standard does not include stains1, clear finishes, recycled (consolidated or reprocessed) latex paint, specialty (industrial, marine or automotive) coatings, or paint sold in aerosol cans.

Green Seal Green Facilities Partnership [PDF]
Abstract: The aims of the Partnership are to provide recognition and, if requested, technical assistance to organizations that are working to implement environmentally preferable operations and maintenance practices. The Green Facilities Partnership is not a standard-based certification program; rather, the partnership provides recognition based on implementation of an action plan that is specific to each partner organizations particular challenges and opportunities. The Green Facilities Partnership is intended to complement established green building certification programs, in particular the US Green Building Council's LEED rating systems. In order to achieve the highest level of the partnership--Green Facilities Champion--organization will be expected to make all reasonable efforts to achieve LEED certification for its operations and maintenance program.

Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool (HealthySEAT)
Abstract: EPA has developed a unique software tool to help school districts evaluate and manage their school facilities for key environmental, safety and health issues. [Note: EPA is using the term "district" to broadly describe any institutional system for managing multiple schools, whether they are public, private, tribal, charter or some variation.] The Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool (HealthySEATv2) is designed to be customized and used by district-level staff to conduct completely voluntary self-assessments of their school (and other) facilities and to track and manage information on environmental conditions school by school. In addition to powerful software that can be used by districts to track any facility issues it chooses, EPA has also included critical elements of all of its regulatory and voluntary programs for schools, as well as web links to more detailed information. Districts and others can download HealthySEATv2 at no cost from the EPA web site. HealthySEATv2 is meant to be loaded and used on district computers; once it is downloaded from the EPA web site, HealthySEATv2 is yours to customize and use as you see fit. There are no reporting requirements and no obligation to use the checklist EPA has provided.

Midwest Buildings Technology Application Center (MBTAC)
Abstract: This web site is a project of the Energy Center of Wisconsin and the University of Illinois at Chicago Energy Resources Center with support from the National Association of State Energy Offices and the U.S. Department of Energy. MBTAC provides the Midwest States and their commercial building partners with the information, education, and technical assistance necessary to continue and expand, in a coordinated manner, the deployment of DOE Building Technology Program energy efficient technologies and practices. The "Market Sectors" section is similar to the GLRPPR Sector Resources. For each sector, an online library of resources (case studies, fact sheets, reports, articles, presentations, software tools, etc.), a listing of relevant events, and a list of relevant partnership efforts are provided. The "E-Line" is an online form for the submission of requests for technical assistance, information or other MBTAC offerings. A note on the site indicates that as questions are submitted to the E-line, the questions and answers will be cataloged and categorized for browsing as part of the sector-based libraries (similar to the way archived GLRPPR Help Desk questions and answers are integrated into our Sector Resources). Sectors covered on the MBTAC site include: colleges & universities; K-12 schools; government buildings; commercial office buildings; health care; retail stores; hotels and motels; and multifamily residential buildings.

Minnesota Sustainable Design Guide Version 2.0
Abstract: The Minnesota Sustainable Design Guide educates and assists architects, building owners, occupants, educators, students, and the general public concerning sustainable building design. The Guide is a design tool that can be used to overlay environmental issues on the design, construction, and operation of both new and renovated facilities. It can be used to set sustainable design priorities and goals; develop appropriate sustainable design strategies; and to determine performance measures to guide the sustainable design and decision-making processes. It can also be used as a management tool to organize and structure environmental concerns during the design, construction, and operations phases. The Guide was developed by the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Quantifying Sustainability: A Study of Three Sustainable Building Rating Systems and the AIA Position Statement [PDF]
Abstract: This study of three green building rating systems (Green Globes, SBTool 07, and LEED NC 2.2) assesses their effectiveness in supporting the goals of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) sustainability position statement. In late 2007, the initial results were shared with the three groups whose systems were reviewed. After receiving feedback, the study was modified and further refined into the final report. The purpose of this exercise is to offer analysis to both industry and the public as an opportunity to learn how three unique, creative and evolving green building rating systems resonate in various dimensions with the goals of the AIA position statement on sustainability and our goal to achieve carbon neutrality in buildings by 2030.

Sustainable Flooring: Successful Community Partnerships Build Sustainable School Buildings
Abstract: Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colo., embarked on a mission: to work with designers in creating a high-performance school that not only set new standards in education facility design, but also stayed within the restraints of a typical school budget. To achieve this goal, the district chose to pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its new Fossil Ridge High School. The result: A state-of-the-art, 290,000-square-foot building with capacity for 1,800 students--all of whom will learn in an environmentally responsible, healthy building that's saving the school district money. U.S. EPA Healthy School Environments Portal
Abstract: The Healthy School Environments Web pages are intended to serve as a gateway to on-line resources to help facility managers, school administrators, architects, design engineers, school nurses, parents, teachers and staff address environmental health issues in schools. Included on these pages are links to information on: the design, construction and renovation of school buildings; energy efficiency for schools; environmental education; facility operations and maintenance; indoor environmental air quality; legislation and regulations related to children's environmental health; outdoor air pollution; portable classrooms; safety and preparedness; waste issues, including recycling, waste reduction and composting; and water issues. The site also provides quick links to relevant U.S. EPA programs. USGBC Build Green Schools
Abstract: Launched on October 16, 2007 by the U.S. Green Building Council, this site is filled with profiles of schools that have already gone green, examples of policies governments and school districts have instituted to ensure future schools are green, and a social networking site for visitors to share their experiences, best practices, and creative ideas. The "Resources" section includes videos and slideshows, project profiles, publications, links to research related to green school buildings and their benefits, and links to related green building web sites. A special section outlines LEED for schools and related resources, including a link to a free LEED for Schools 101 online course.
