Abstract: Developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), this virtual campus uses an engaging, intuitive format to highlight potential environmental issues at nine campus areas, and provides compliance information and good management practices on a number of issues. Areas covered include arts/theater areas, cafeterias, dormitories, drains/sewers, grounds/vehicles, labs, medical areas, power plants and waste storage. Use the Content List part of the site as an index or site map. Lists of acronyms, useful links and a glossary are also included.

Green Cleaning Pollution Prevention Calculator
Abstract: The Green Cleaning Pollution Prevention Calculator quantifies the projected environmental benefits of purchasing and using "green" janitorial services and products. It is designed to forecast the environmental benefits of reducing chemical use by doing some or all pollution prevention measures typically involved in the routine interior cleaning of an office building. This tool also enables users to identify which green cleaning measures will have the greatest impact in reducing their use of hazardous chemicals and in preventing pollution. The Calculator's output applies only to standard office cleaning products and practices, and does not apply to other building maintenance issues, such as equipment maintenance, pest control, or landscaping activities.

Green Seal Environmental Standard for Paints and Coatings [PDF]
Abstract: This standard establishes environmental requirements for paints and coatings. The standard includes wall, anti-corrosive, and reflective coatings, floor paints and primers and undercoats. The standard does not include stains1, clear finishes, recycled (consolidated or reprocessed) latex paint, specialty (industrial, marine or automotive) coatings, or paint sold in aerosol cans.

Green Seal Environmental Standards
Abstract: Green Seal bases its work on thorough, state-of-the-art scientific evaluations using internationally accepted methodologies. Product evaluations are conducted using a life-cycle approach to ensure that all significant environmental impacts of a product are considered, from raw materials extraction through manufacturing to use and disposal. Wherever possible, Green Seal standards cite international test methods for evaluating product performance or environmental attributes such as toxicity, and its procedures conform to international standards for ecolabelling. In developing environmental standards and certifying products, Green Seal follows the Guiding Principles and Procedures for Type I Environmental Labeling adopted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14024). Green Seal has played an important role in helping to shape policy at the national and international levels in the practice and use of ecolabeling and environmental product standards. We were instrumental in the development of ecolabelling policy standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) under the ISO 14000 environmental management series. Abstract: Greening Schools is a joint project of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center (WMRC). This program is designed to assist schools with improving physical environmental conditions, while also providing teachers with standards-based tools to introduce concepts of waste reduction and pollution prevention to students. The program offers free technical assistance to all Illinois schools, public and private. The program?s Web site offers pollution prevention, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and related resources for all school personnel, including teachers, administrators, and facility managers.

Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool (HealthySEAT)
Abstract: EPA has developed a unique software tool to help school districts evaluate and manage their school facilities for key environmental, safety and health issues. [Note: EPA is using the term "district" to broadly describe any institutional system for managing multiple schools, whether they are public, private, tribal, charter or some variation.] The Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool (HealthySEATv2) is designed to be customized and used by district-level staff to conduct completely voluntary self-assessments of their school (and other) facilities and to track and manage information on environmental conditions school by school. In addition to powerful software that can be used by districts to track any facility issues it chooses, EPA has also included critical elements of all of its regulatory and voluntary programs for schools, as well as web links to more detailed information. Districts and others can download HealthySEATv2 at no cost from the EPA web site. HealthySEATv2 is meant to be loaded and used on district computers; once it is downloaded from the EPA web site, HealthySEATv2 is yours to customize and use as you see fit. There are no reporting requirements and no obligation to use the checklist EPA has provided.

Illinois Sustainable Schools Compact [PDF]
Abstract: The Illinois Sustainable Schools Compact program launched on January 31, 2008 features best practices that K-12 schools can voluntarily pursue to achieve greater environmental sustainability. Schools as well as districts can check off up to 12 practices to participate, including things on the list the school or district is already doing. Those who wish to participate should print two copies of the compact, have the principal sign the documents after checking off practices the school is now pursuing and aims to pursue, then mail both copies to: Office of the Lieutenant Governor, Attn: Jon Zirkle, Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph, Suite 15-200, Chicago, IL 60601-3220. Lt. Governor Quinn will sign both copies, keep one on file, then mail one copy back to the school.

Sustainable Flooring: Successful Community Partnerships Build Sustainable School Buildings
Abstract: Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colo., embarked on a mission: to work with designers in creating a high-performance school that not only set new standards in education facility design, but also stayed within the restraints of a typical school budget. To achieve this goal, the district chose to pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its new Fossil Ridge High School. The result: A state-of-the-art, 290,000-square-foot building with capacity for 1,800 students--all of whom will learn in an environmentally responsible, healthy building that's saving the school district money. The Sustainable Sites Initiative
Abstract: On Oct. 6, 2007, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), The University of Texas at Austin's Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the U.S. Botanic Garden announced the development of a new rating system for sustainable landscape design, called the Sustainable Sites Initiative. Just as the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® rating system measures a building's environmental impact, the Sites Initiative will measure the sustainability of designed landscapes of all types, including public, commercial and residential projects. The U.S. Green Building Council is lending its support to this project and plans to adopt the Sustainable Sites metrics into its LEED® system once they are finished. The Sustainable Sites Initiative web site provides the rationale for the project, an overview of the scope, products and review process, tips, project history, information on partners, and links to draft reports when they become available.

Abstract: The Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) aims to ensure that all schools are free from hazards associated with mismanaged chemicals. SC3 gives K-12 schools information and tools to responsibly manage chemicals. By using the tools provided on this site and pulling together a team with a variety of perspectives, expertise, and resources you can develop a successful chemical management program. Schools, parents, and local organizations can partner to create a chemical management program that meets the unique needs of their schools. SC3 is one component of EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC), a national effort to conserve natural resources and energy by managing materials more efficiently.
