Pollution prevention art curricula appropriate for all grades are slowly becoming available to not only develop awareness, but to provide new teaching techniques and procedures in the classroom. Many are complete with lessons, activities, and teaching standards. Several also have materials for children to share with parents and are designed for use in the home environment. At an introductory workshop for artists, one of the primary thoughts shared by the artists, once they became aware of the risks associated with their particular form of expression, was that they wished they had known about these risks when they were first learning how to use that media. Their second concern was they would like to help other artists understand environmental risks associated with their style and how to minimize or reduce the risks.

This section of the topic hub offers a selection of high-quality educational tools for teachers seeking to offer alternatives for their students. Links to educational materials and programs are provided, including the following:

  • Multidisciplinary educational K-12 materials
  • On-line curricula (many are linked to local and or national standards) and activities developed by education experts that promote IPM in schools
  • Professional development for school administrators, school boards, and educators
Pollution prevention in the arts has most frequently addressed art projects that reuse classroom materials or incorporate recycled materials in the product. P2 in the Arts will provide links to these creative educational resources, but will additionally identify the following:

  • Substitutes for hazardous, non-traditional materials in non-traditional creative art forms (e.g. metal sculpture, multi-media multi-dimensional art)
  • Paper art work without papier-m?ch?
  • Solvent-free oil painting
  • Creating expos of educational art projects that benefit from P2 efforts
  • Local and national sources that offer art materials for teachers that had originated as industrial waste or office waste and are reusable resources
