WASHINGTON, DC, November 15, 2013 (ENS) – The average American produces 4.4 pounds of trash a day, and as a whole the United States produces more than 250 million tons of trash a year. Yet more of that trash is recycled each year. The national recycling rate has increased every year for the past 30 years to the current recycling rate of 34.7 percent, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Today is America Recycles Day and many organizations are planning to recycle more and encourage all Americans to join them.
In his proclamation of November 15 as America Recycles Day, President Barack Obama said, “A typical American produces more than four pounds of waste each day, and some of this waste, including old computers and cell phones, could damage our health and harm our environment if not recycled properly.”
