April
California Priority Products List
April 17, 2014 – 11:00 AM PDT – part of the Safer Chemistry Challenge Program 2014 Spring Webinar Series
Presenter: Karl Palmer, California Department of Toxic Substances Control, Chief, Safer Consumer Products Branch
Description:California Priority Products List
Under the California Safer Consumer Products Regulations (SCPR), California is carrying out a process of identifying chemicals of concern in products, requiring the evaluation of safer alternatives, and implementing regulations that promote reducing exposures to hazardous chemical-product combinations. The SCPR established a two-phase alternatives analysis process that requires manufacturers guides companies through steps to evaluate alternatives. The overall goal is safer alternatives and no regrettable substitutions. The CA Dept of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) recently released its first three priority products under the SCPR:
- Children’s foam padded sleeping products containing the flame retardant TDCPP (chlorinated tris)
- Spray polyurethane foam systems containing unreacted diisocyanates (used in home insulation), and
- Paint and varnish strippers containing methylene chloride
Starting with these three initial “priority products”, California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control has initiated a process that launches a new framework for chemicals management and toxics exposure reduction in our homes, workplaces and environment.
“We are very pleased to have reached an important milestone in implementing California’s Safer Consumer Product regulations. We believe our regulations and the process we’re starting will help stimulate development of safer products, meet consumer demand, and promote the protection of people and our environment.”

Designing Employee Engagement Programs that Impact a Company’s Triple Bottom Line
June 4, 2014 – part of the P2Rx Behavior Change Webinar Series
BAE Systems is a $14.4 billion multinational corporation that reduced its total utility costs by 48% over a three year period with a utility cost takeout (UCT) energy efficiency program. This would not have been possible without first enrolling BAE’s 43,000 employees across the globe in its sustainability plan.
Morgan Rooney, Sustainability Communications Specialist for BAE Systems was responsible for initiating and running the employee engagement program to support BAE Sustainability goals. Morgan will share her strategies and successes for getting employees to buy into a corporate sustainability mandate for the long haul and how this affected and continues to affect BAE’s triple bottom line.
Webinar attendees will learn education tactics, how to set up a task force or green team, employee challenges, and awards and recognition programs that work towards initiating and sustaining behavior change for large communities.

Alternative Products: Release Agents for Parts Manufacturing, Concrete Stamping and Asphalt Manufacture and Application
September 9, 2014 – 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT
(Hosted by WSPPN & NPPR as part of the Safer Chemistry Challenge Program Fall Webinar Series)
In some manufacturing operations, various substrates are used to manufacture parts which are molded into a particular form. Mold release agents are used to prevent the fiberglass or plastic from sticking to the mold. Concrete and concrete overlay stamping involve stamping a pattern into concrete to give it the appearance of stone. Release agents are used between the curing concrete and the mats with the pattern to be stamped to prevent the concrete from sticking to the mat. A release agent is also used in asphalt manufacturing plants and when asphalt is being applied to roads to prevent the asphalt from building up and sticking to equipment and tools.
EPA Region IX and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) sponsored a project conducted by the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA), a nonprofit organization, to identify, develop, test and demonstrate low-VOC, low toxicity alternatives to the high VOC content materials used as release agents in these applications.
IRTA tested and demonstrated alternatives including water-based release agents, petroleum based lubricants, lubricants based on soy, and vegetable oil containing soy and canola oil recycled from restaurants. IRTA analyzed and compared the cost of using the alternatives. The project has been completed and the SCAQMD plans to develop regulations requiring the use of low-VOC alternatives over the next year or so.
Dr. Katy Wolf will present the findings of IRTA’s alternatives product research project and provide a comparison of alternative release agents.

“So you want to start a Green Business Program?”
September 10, 2014 – 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM PDT – part of the How-to Green Business Webinar Series
New Green Business Programs are being started across the nation but where does one start? What are the benefits and how much do they cost? Hear from successful programs and decide upon an approach that makes sense for you?
California passed AB 913 which took effect in January 2012 to facilitate growth and development of the local government Green Business programs across the state. Today, with 21 programs across the state and more than 2800 SMBs certified, they have collectively reduced 171,677 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Learn from Jo Fleming from the California Green Business Program, how to start a Green Business Program, how they work, and positive effects on a community.
Gail Suzuki Jones from the State Energy Office in Hawaii will explain how Hawaii started their green business program, initiated new projects and attracted participation from champions, mentors and student interns. This session will provide agencies, non-profits, as well as interested businesses, and individuals with their approach to partnering, providing training and outreach to encourage businesses on the Hawaiian Islands to go green.
This Webinar is sponsored by WSPPN and the Green Business Engagement Network (GBENN).
